Last Sunday August 25th myself, my long suffering husband & some friends headed off bright & early on the 2 hour journey to just outside Ahascragh, Co. Galway. We arrived at our destination at 9.30am ready to walk the course in good time before the competition started at 10am.
Our first class was the 3rd class of the day, so once we had walked the course we headed back to the horseboxes for a quick cup of tea & biscuits before starting to tack up & get ready.
This was to be the husbands return to competition for the first time in about 20 years, and we were doing the pairs class together, so I helped him to get ready first as his horse needs a bit more warming up than mine, then once he was safely on board I got myself ready.
We were first to go in the pairs class & the format was slightly different to the last X-Jump I did, this time one of the pair jumped the first course of show jumps & then both done the x-country as normal then the 2nd person done the 2nd course of show jumps. The husband opted to do he first lot of show jumps to get them out of the way then was going to follow me around the x-country course, which was fine until Tizzy the witch took a dislike to fence 6 on the XC a pretty straightforward Roller & we had a run out, because I wasn’t expecting it, but after that we flew round the rest of the course and finished a very respectable 2nd, which the husband was thrilled with, not a bad way to mark your return to competition, start like you mean to go on and all that!
So next up was the individuals, which I done with Tizzy, the husband decided that the pairs was enough for his first day out, we had the last fence down in the first lot of show jumps, totally my fault as I jumped it at an angle to get a better turn to the XC fences, but she flew around the rest of the course to finish 2nd again. So very happy!
So a great day was had by all, even my friend A who’s 14.2hh pony Sparkle was dwarfed by this 18hh monster we met!
