Day 17 – Your Equestrian Idol

As a kid I loved Eddie Macken, he was one of the top showjumpers in the 80’s (I’m giving away my age now) and had some fantastic horses like Boomerang, Carrolls Flight, Carrolls Spotlight, La Bamba & Welfrenkone, he was a member of the Irish team who won the Aga Khan Cup three years in a row (1977 to 79), along with Paul Darragh, Capt. Con Power, and James Kernan. He also won a record four consecutive Hickstead Derby wins (1976 to 79), two individual silver medals at the Show Jumping World Championships, 1974 with Pele and 1978 on Boomerang, an individual silver medal at the 1977 European Championships with Pele and fourth in the World Cup Championships  with Carrolls Winward. He represented Ireland at the Olympic Games in 1992 Barcelona (on Welfrenkone finishing 75th individually – team 14th) and in 1996 Atlanta (on Schalkaar finishing 37th individually – team 8th), and as team trainer in 2004 (Athens). He also  jumped at the Failte Ireland Dublin Horse Show 2008 as part of the Aga Khan Nations Cup team.

  1. Eddie Macken is a legend!
Have you seen the H&C documentary on him? I think you can order it on DVD…also do you watch TG4’s Jockey Eile? His wife is one for the professionals they work with at the start – she teaches them how to ride 😀
